The Coastal Path

Head south towards the coast, where you’ll encounter breathtaking views of the English Channel. The path winds along rugged cliffs and through open countryside, offering a mix of dramatic seascapes and serene farmland.

Blackgang to Atherfield Bay

As you continue, you’ll traverse through areas like Blackgang and Atherfield Bay. This part of the walk is characterised by the rolling hills of St Catherines down behind you, and open fields inland, with a panoramic view of the English Channel. The natural beauty of the landscape is complemented by the sounds of waves crashing and birds soaring along the cliffs.

Brighstone to Freshwater Bay

The path then leads along Brighstone cliffs where you will have to take a couple of detours along the road to avoid recent cliff falls. There are a number of small Chines or rivers along this part of the coast which you will either have to detour around or the path will take you down one side and back up the other. Take care in wet weather. One of these is Grange Chine where there is a small camp site with a seasonal shop selling ice creams and drinks!

Compton Beach has a seasonal Ice Cream van which can also be found at Freshwater Bay where the Independant Lifeboat also has a small shop selling refreshments. There are also toilets at Freshwater Bay

Tennyson Down

From Freshwater Bay, the route ascends Tennyson Down. Named after the poet Alfred Lord Tennyson, this high ridge offers panoramic views of the Isle of Wight and the surrounding waters. The climb is steep but rewarding, with the summit providing an ideal spot for a rest and a moment to take in the stunning vistas.

The Final Stretch to the Needles

Descending from Tennyson Down, you’ll make your way towards Alum Bay and the iconic Needles. The path here is well-trodden and offers spectacular views of the chalk stacks rising majestically from the sea. The Needles Pleasure Park marks the end of your journey, offering a variety of attractions and a chance to relax after your walk.

This route is approximately 14 miles long and typically takes 5-7 hours to complete. It offers a rich tapestry of landscapes, from dramatic coastal cliffs to tranquil woodlands and open fields, making it a varied and memorable walk on the Isle of Wight.
