The coastal footpath from Bembridge to Ventnor spans approximately 16 miles, taking you through some of the Isle of Wight’s most scenic and diverse landscapes. This section of the Isle of Wight Coastal Footpath offers a blend of coastal beauty, charming villages, and dramatic cliffs, making it a memorable journey for walkers.

Starting Point: Bembridge

Your journey begins in the picturesque village of Bembridge, known for its tranquil harbor and historic windmill. As you leave Bembridge, follow the coastal path westwards along the shore, passing Bembridge Lifeboat Station and the iconic Bembridge Ledge.

Whitecliff Bay

The path soon leads you to Whitecliff Bay, a stunning sandy beach framed by white chalk cliffs. This is a perfect spot to take a break and enjoy the coastal views. The path then ascends Culver Down, offering panoramic vistas of the Solent and the English Channel.

Sandown

Descending from Culver Down, you’ll reach the popular seaside town of Sandown. The long, sandy beach and traditional pier are highlights here. The coastal path takes you along the esplanade, where you can enjoy a leisurely walk and take in the bustling seaside atmosphere.

Shanklin

Continuing along the coast, the next stop is Shanklin, another charming seaside resort. Shanklin boasts a beautiful beach, a quaint old village, and the scenic Shanklin Chine, a lush gorge with waterfalls and rich vegetation. The path meanders through the town, offering plenty of opportunities for refreshments and exploration.

Luccombe

Leaving Shanklin, the path heads towards Luccombe, a small hamlet nestled between Shanklin and Ventnor. This section of the trail is more rugged and offers spectacular views of the coastline. The path here can be steep and challenging in places but rewards you with breathtaking scenery.

Bonchurch

The next village you’ll encounter is Bonchurch, known for its historic charm and serene atmosphere. Bonchurch is home to a beautiful old church and a picturesque pond, making it a delightful place for a short rest.

Destination: Ventnor

Your walk concludes in Ventnor, a vibrant town built on the steep slopes of the island’s southern coast. Ventnor is famous for its mild microclimate, Victorian architecture, and the Ventnor Botanic Garden. The town offers a range of cafes, restaurants, and shops, providing a perfect end to your walking adventure.

Bembridge has a small car park at the Lifeboat station where this route starts.

There are plenty of shops and toilets in Bembridge, and along the route especially along the sea fronts od Sandown and Shanklin.

Transport

The Southern Vectis Bus Bus Route 8 runs between Ryde, Bembridge and along the initial parts of the route.
